Spotify/YouTube Website Redesign

Duration: 3 weeks
Brief: Redesign webpages of popular platforms used by my peers
Role: UX Research and UI/UX Design

Spotify and Youtube have a prominent young adult user base (ages 18-34),
providing curated and personalized entertainment.

While both of these platforms are popular, users are often overwhelmed
with the amount of features offered and not being able to easily access
content they want to access.  How can we create a more intuitive design
to encourage daily use?

Challenge
Redesign Spotify and Youtube’s homepages, Spotify’s playlist page,
and Youtube’s subscriptions page.

Solution
Create a simplified look while keeping the same brand identity to ensure
ease of use for consumers.

    Interview Findings

I interviewed a total of 6 people (ages 20-23) ranging from
people who use the platforms all the time to hardly.

    Current Strengths  Possible Improvements
    • “The library feature is prominent and easily accessible and if I do want to see something recommended, that's easy to find and the options are well laid out.

    • “ I like the curated playlists, I've discovered a lot of good music by picking a Daily Mix and it throws some new random songs into stuff I already like. I also like that it calls out new songs from artists I like, I don't really keep up with musicians on social media so that's how I learn new songs/albums have dropped.”

    • “The playlists are easy to use, everything makes sense when I go to look for it.”
    • “I like Spotify Mobile better, the split screen of my Library and the mobile home screen just puts too much stuff in my face at once and makes it hard for me to find what I want quickly.”

    • “Minimize whatever they have on there because it's a lot of things going and it's overwhelm”

Based on the interviews, people seemed to favor either being
recommended content or having a curated set. Overall, they wanted
the content to be simpler to navigate with customization.

    Current Strengths  Possible Improvements
    • “The curation is IMPECCABLE. I don't know how it does it but
    • it always throws up the right videos in line with my daily habits.”
    • “I like that suggestions and most watched channels are pushed to the top. Also it’s easy to search.”
    • “I think some of the tags get a little weird. I understand "Music" and "Gaming"
but sometimes they get really out of pocket, like "Subliminal stimuli"? Something
more generic would help me feel more confident in using their tagging system”

    • “The colors of the thumbnails, channel photos, etc. fill up the page and make
      everything look cluttered and distracting.”

    • “Maybe an option to toggle the subscriptions to have one line each, so all their
new videos are in one line rather than every subscription in chronological order.”
